After their mother has a heart attack, adult siblings Anna, Portia and Emery go home again. As they wait to see if their mother will be okay, they deal with their current situations as well as talk about their past. Anna, the oldest, is having another affair, one of many. Portia is in the middle of a divorce and Emery is trying to figure out how to ask his sisters for their eggs so that he and his partner Alejandro can have a child. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. As the three spend their days together they think about their childhood and how they came to be the people they are now. Anna delves into her addiction issues, Portia tries to sort of being the middle child and being thought of as the dummy in the family and Emery remembers what it was like to realize he was gay. This very real novel is about a dysfunctional family that loves each other all the same.
I was asked to review this book for
TLC Book Tours. I will admit, after coming off the
Hunger Games novels this was a very different book. The author, Jessica Anya Blau, has created a very real family who definitely has their share of very real problems. Make no mistake, this is an adult book. It deals with adult issues like addiction and sex and at times it was a tough read. However I definitely appreciated that the author didn't sugarcoat things and I came away from this novel having both laughed and cried. While I wouldn't say that this book is for the faint of heart, it is a really good read with very real characters. I definitely enjoyed it.

I typically go for drama in books so I think I'll like this one. Although addiction is a really tough subject, strong characters pull me in.

it sounds really good! i try not to read these types of books though {or see these types of movies} since it's a little too close to my job. but i think a lot of people feel they're all alone in their dysfunctional family experience, so i love when books portray this type of realistic story.
