The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Skeeter Phelan has just returned home after graduating from Old Miss and although she has a degree her mother will not rest until Skeeter has a ring on her finger.  But the only thing Skeeter can think about is that she's come home to find her beloved maid, Constantine, gone and she wants to know why.

Aibileen is a black maid currently raising her 17th white child.  And after the death of her son she finds that something in her has shifted, making her harder than before.  Although she loves the little girl she cares for she knows one day things will shift and that little girl will see her as not someone she loves but simply as the maid.

Minny is Aibileen's best friend and is known around Jackson, Mississippi for having a big mouth.  Although she can cook like nobodies business she doesn't know when to hold her tongue and that gets her into all sorts of trouble.  After being fired from her previous job, she finally finds a new one with a white woman who has secrets of her own.

All these women are so different and yet in The Help they come together because of a common bond.  They want to see changes in the town that they live in.  But do those changes come with too steep a price?  Lines are about to be crossed and lives are about to change.

Obviously, I am a little behind in getting to this book.  It wasn't until the movie came out that I thought maybe it would be an interesting read.  What I found in the pages of this book was more than I ever thought.  And I truly believe that this is the kind of book that everyone should read.  The characters in this book are so amazingly REAL and after finishing I could help but feel like I was saying goodbye to some amazing friends (Skeeter, Minny, Aibileen and even crazy Celia Foote) as well as some enemies (Hilly Holbrook).  And as I've always said, a book that can make me cry is a good book.  And I will tell you all right now this book made me cry.

Pick it up and read it.  You need to.

I have been meaning to read this book! I'm always a books-are-better-than-movies girl and I haven't seen the movie yet, so this is a must-read!

I'm about halfway through this book right now, but I've seen the movie and I have to say that Celia might have been my favorite character in the movie, behind Minny.

The movie was so good. One of the best I may have ever seen. Such great casting. So after seeing the movie, I decided I HAD the read the book because books > movies. I'm really, really enjoying it so far, especially since you get more of a deeper knowledge into the character's lives in the book.

Cafe Fashionista

I am dying to read this book - even more so after reading this review. Definitely picking this one up over the weekend! :)

This book was absolutely fantastic. I agree - this should be required reading for everyone. They should add it to the curriculum for high school reading. And the movie was one of those rare finds that actually does a great job of representing the book upon which it's based. Love, love, love.

I really want to read this--I am flying to Paris on Tuesday and thought this might be a good plane read... though if you're saying I'm going to cry (and I'm a big-time cryer) then maybe I should skip it and go with something light instead. But I fully intend to read this soon--have heard SO many great things!
